there is a whole range of racing quads out there with streamlined profiles

Sorry meant to respond to this as well.

Deet please point me to one. ALL racing quads I've seen so far are streamlined when horizontal (kinda, if you call it that without a proper canopy) but present as a fat turd when tilting forward to accelerate.

Ideally, for forward flight, the body should present something similar to TDR or banshee Aka similar narrow profile whether completely horizontal, or tilted 50 deg forwards for acceleration, blades notwithstanding. And with multis those props are way smaller so it's less of a drag.

The DJI inspire, and kasamas military multirotor, are the only ones I've seen that has designed the body like this.

Ok not DJI specific, but they seem to be the only players with enough R&D budget...

What would change the game in AV multirotors is in-flight battery jettison / and-or swap.

Traditionally you can't since any connector we use xt60 or ec5 etc, are too tight and fiddly.

But with the Inspire, you could maintain a small on-board flight pack (2 for redundancy if you like). Then, have a swappable main pack accessible from under.

Eg of function: main pack used for flights, and the small packs are topped up in a controlled fashion from main packs. When main packs. Are low fly it back to home auto hovering with vision sensors for accuracy. hit a button on Tx to jettison pack to the ground.

During this process internals swap power source temporarily to the small flight packs.

Now, you already have a pack standing up in the upright position nearby. So, the vision sensors guide the quad to automatically "sit" on the new pack. It then returns to hover height, and you continue. Once new pack is loaded, power source switches back to main packs. Electronics now use the main pack to charge up the small packs. Rinse and repeat for perpetual all day flight.

Possibilities include: you could tell the quad where jettison location, and new pack locations are. When low batt always go off, bring it nearby, and it'll just reload on its own.

Yes it sounds like a convenience. But just remember, it's cheaper to boil water over a stove, it just takes longer. yet  most of us use an electric kettle?? Convenience does have a price tag and some can be worth it.

you can't run 2 packs, on an inspire, the packs are in a moulded case, that is designed for fast swaps, but the case includes the lipo balancer and the cell monitor/display

you won't be able to modify this thing, its not for that market, you buy it as is, you fly it as is

the only options are, a larger lipo, or a second Tx for the gimbal operator

It really is not made for "our" market, its made for photographers with NO RC knowledge at all

If you don't like the package, don't buy it, get something else that you can modify if thats what you want to do. Even the TX is an integral part of the complete package

BTW the reason DJI have the research budget they have is they are a university research department

Its funny, if it wasn't for the moving arms, I don't think many of us would be very interested at all, it would just be seem to be a larger Phantom Vision2

Wow, you guys must really not like DJI at all. Well if we're really going to get that low in how we discuss features, I'll play along. Here's one:

Neither any Scarab or Walkera Scoutx is going to get you laid. That said, neither will the s800 or s1000. The only "spreading" it's going to do is in your imagination in front of you laptop while you missus is asleep.

The DJI Inspire, just might.

Welcome to the DJI haters club. It is a fairly specific market target though with a pretty high buy in price.

The new Inspire 1 is also known as "Aspire 2" for the current phantom owners.

Yes, the flyaways don't really help and their apparent lack of customer support or even initiative to fix the issue certainly would draw a lot of hate.

Price. Let's put it into perspective.

It's about 2-3 times the price of the phantom 2 vision RTF package, depending on where you shop. Would you trade 2 phantoms for 1 of this? Many would. Because the features are far better. Aesthetics are far better.

Now let's consider the banshee set up for speed. That's what, 10k+ invested in a heli? What does it buy you that a T-rex DFC package won't? And on a good day, that's 10% of the price. Yet no one says a banshee speed is a waste.

And finally, the body looks more aerodynamic that every other multi I've seen in existence. Mounting your components vertically is great idea.

Here's some simple diagrams - sorry for the quality. Most people think - racing quad, lying flat and nose-in:

= AERODYNAMIC!

When in actual fact, in FFF, it actually looks like this:

So not only does the racer have to contend with it's own weight, but also the immense downforces acting on the body, plus the aerodynamic resistance such a surface presents.

Let's compare that to the Inspire's design - here is it lying flat nose in:

And then, here it is in FFF:

Now, I don't have any numbers, but on inspection, am I the only one that thinks this is more aerodynamic?

I don't really know too much about the speed end of quads - is that considered fast?

For making it fair.

Here's HK honouring the US price, and AUD conversion rates.

And below is from an ozzie site I won't name, who saw it fit to charge 26% more.

On the right day, you could buy an entire 90-sized heli kit with the difference. Or one Kontronik Kosmik 200A. There must be some reason driving up prices locally, but I'm not sure why it would be that much.

I have found one vendor in AUS that is listing it as $3999 (pre-order)
