400 watt charge solution for 150 bux
« on: October 16, 2011, 09:06:32 AM »
hi guys, this is too good not to share.  HK pruducts that actually work as advertised, and slightly a bit better.  a 540 watt power supply and 400 watt charger for 150 bux, that has nice construction, and has a nice feel to it.

400 true watts will charge a dead flat 5000 mah 6s pack at 16 amps, and have it finished balanceing in  20 odd minutes.

cwazy power, no weird smells or anything funky so far, just giggle watching these pax get slammed lmao :D

cheers

Looks like a nice clear control panel - find some of the Hyperion's a bit of a chore to wade through the menus - good find - let us know how it holds up!

I have this setup as well. The menus in the charger are a bit interesting but once I got used to it, can easily use most if the functions. An instruction manual would be great though.

hi bob, the operation is identical to the at-8 if that is any help.   i find this layout something i can use in my sleep, no mistakes.

i tried every type of error i could think of today at the feild, and it passed with flying colors, reverse polarities, wrong cell types, charge durations etc,,,, even connecting the wrong pax balance line and trying to charge a pack.....  the chargers operation is stable, predictable and apperearing at this early stage to be safe.

on a side note, being i am running it at 18 volts, it has a better headroom on my  360 watt generator, allowing me to get  a 10 amp charge on 6s in about 25 mins per pack.   that is only about 250/280 watts.  that particular gennie is a el cheapo 139 dollar bunnings unit.  ( we have no site power) and im pretty much the only one into big electrics there cause the foothills guys are pussies when it comes to fbl units and 90 size electrics even though they have bucketloads of encouragement.........;) and a great example toboot lol, so i am not inclinded to purchase and cart around anything bigger at the mo....

in short going well, handles  flaky gennie voltages and has a bunch of appropriate failsafes.

Never played with the AT-8 but will go track down the instruction manual.

I have left my power supplies at 17.5V. At max 400W output and 80% efficiency, there is still a little head room. I run an 800W generator ($300 supercheap job) and it works fine. Haven't done any more than a 4S pack but the Whiplash is coming sometime before christmas pending moon phases.

So nearly bought one of these... Will next time. I've got 2 of the ac6's. Have never failed me. Reversed polarities, wrong pack type and balance type.

Hows this setup going?  Really keen for a "few weeks in" real world report.
My trusty iCharger 106b+ is finally showing its age, "Connection break" issues on 6S packs and probabily need to consider a bigger wattage PSU if I upgrade my chargers as well.

I was looking at a few different 6s capable setup, also looking to move into a solid 12S \ dual 6S charging setup. Obviously the upper end at Hyperion 720 Superduo3, or 2 x icharger 3010's ,or similar.

Any of those other setups obviously also need a decent power supply, so any separate comments on that 540W PSU would also be welcome..  E.g.  Heat, Stability of supply, etc etc.

hi druid, ill definately revisit this thread in a nother month or so.   so far i have used it to get 4 flights per day on my 90 electrics, and the only thing of concern i have found so far is the bearing in one of the fans in the charger has started to sound a little sqealy at times.  i gave it a shot of oil and it is quiet again, but it is prilly indicative of how they are made so cheaply.

if noise is an issue, the fans on both units are pretty loud, as chargers and the like go.

I've been using this charger for a few months now (different PSU), and I can't fault it. Once you get the hang of the menu structure (yes a manual would have helped...), its really easy to use.  And it's pretty stupid-proof.

I'd happily recommend it.

Cheers

Can you report if this charger still works a few months on? I just got one of these on Monday, and so far cannot fault it, other than the annoying 15-18v power input. I use a 12v 700w server PSU, so I can only get about 300w of power from it. Would have been better if they accepted 24v, so that I could use my 1100w 24v PSU. oh well... it still charges faster than I can get to fly at the field ;)

Hi Beniki, still going as strong as the day i got them :)  They have noisy fans, but work cool as a cucumber.

I use it exclusively for charging thunderpower 65c 4400 and 5000 mah 6s packs, for my 90 size leecys. I always charge set at 20 amps 6s, but it will only achive 16amps ....405 watts.  I can charge 6  x  6s paks starting at 5 am and im out the door for flying by about 20 to 7, so about 18 mins per pack.

I would deem it to be exellent value, and quite stable and reliable.

Great! Makes me very happy for the 60 odd dollars it cost me. I really enjoy the ability to parallel charge 3 x 6s 5000mah packs at 1c
