Waiting on bits to arrive for a tricopter build just using cheap HK gyro's.

Anybody know how they perform compared to WiiM+ ?
Cheers,
Al

By all accounts - the HK gyros should perform well as you're only using them for rate mode..

Just make sure you do the mod on them and secure them internally as the internals have a lot of freedom of movement.. Have a search on helifreak for it if you're not sure...

You won't have selve-leveling but it should be quite stable once you get the gains right.

make sure you post plenty of pictures and details and vids - maybe start your own build thread on it :)

All the kit arrived a few days ago so after a bit of trial and error, an initial test crash and a  'phone a friend' for some guidance on settings, it flew last night. Stoked!

That's cool - great work..

are you able to tell me how long you made the arms and which motors nad props you used..

Any chance of a pic of your yaw setup - that stuff would really help others wanting to build one too.

Great links guys

Think I've got the bug to build a quad.  Anyone here tried the HK quad frame?  Looks like could  be OK with some simple mods.  Don't have the time/equipment to build my own.

I have the hk farme - it's ok for the money but I pulled mine gently apart and reglued it as the arms come glued but hardly any glue.. so it takes some time to pry the arms apartor just add more glue - your choice..

I'm not using my frame till I get me quad sorted as I don't think the HK frame can take too many hard crashes.. so when mine is sorted nd seems to be going ok i'll swap to the frame..

My setup was straight from http://rcexplorer.se/projects/tricopter/tricopter.html using all of his recommended gear:
3 x 2213N 800Kv Brushless motors
3 x TURNIGY Plush 18amp Speed Controllers
4 x Hobby King 401B AVCS Digital Head Lock Gyro
3 x 3mm prop savers
1 x BMS-385DMAX Digital Servo (Metal Gear)

The servo was out of stock so I grabbed this one;
Turnigy 380MAX Micro Servo (Metal Gear) 4.1kg
I was really surprised at the quality of this servo and would probably be ideal on a 500 class Heli.

I use GWS 9x4.7 and then an APC9x4.7 on the rear when I busted one which also helped with orientation because of the different colours. This setup would have no trouble carrying any amount of camera gear

The frame dimensions are 500mm from CG to each motor shaft although I wondering if shorter would make it a bit more agile. I might keep one at 500mm for FPV and try a shorter one to huck around.

The tail mech I made from an old Raptor 90 tail grip I had in my ever expanding box'o'bits. I kept the bearings (a bit notchy but OK for this application) but replaced the shaft with an M4 bolt and using washers as spacers bolted it to a hole drilled in the top of a 10mm long section of C channel aluminium then screwed the ali mount over the end of the 10x10 wood boom. I had to Dremel a recess in the end of the wood boom for the nylock nut on the inside of the C section but this also stopped any side to side movement seeing the ali mount is only fixed in one axis ie: from the top and bottom. I made a simple servo mount by stacking 3mm ply until I had the servo arm where I wanted it and linked to the blade grip with ball joints so there is no slop. The tail holds rock solid.

The HK gyros need a simple mod as described on the site to secure them inside the case properly, then the limit pot needs to be maxed and the delay reduced to 0.

Everything else is pretty much detailed on the site.

I ended up splitting one wood arm where it bolts onto the frame and just CA'd it back together but apparently that wasn't enough :( After flying it in daylight for the first time yesterday and doing some nice lazy circuits, the arm failed in flight. Up until then it was flying beautifully. Time for V2 in carbon :smirk:
Cheers,
Al

I bought a GoPro camera on the weekend and mounted on the Tri, here's the first flight in 720p. These camera's are all kinds of awesome.

LOL yeah Carl, he was about to heave the uggy at it, he's autistic and non verbal so it was his way of saying "get that friggin' thing away from me Dad!" I was trying to tell him no, fly away and laugh at the same time.

I'll get some pic's up soon but it's pretty agricultural.

I was really surprised at how smooth the video turned out as I has previously strapped my iPhone to it and the footage was unwatchable due to vibration. Thought I was going to have to spend an age balancing every thing but the GoPro just sorts it all out somehow. I have got some nicer motors coming for it with hubs rather than prop savers too so between that and some more gain tweaking to get rid of that slight oscillating wobble it should get some nice footage.
Cheers,
Al
