Title: arcHELI New Direction
Post by: Ozzy Mozzy on March 09, 2018, 10:04:31 PM
This post is a follow on from Wills news he posted up today... Seen here on the home page www.archeli.com.au/home (http://archeli.com.au/index.php)

Will and I had a chat this morning about the forum and it's future. So I am here to start up a conversation with whomever wishes to get involved and or add anything to this discussion...

As most of you all know arcHELI has been moved from a VBulletin forum to a SMF forum with great success, which is still on Wills sever and maintained by Will.

First thing on the agenda is the hosting of the forum, Will would like this taken and moved to another server. I am happy to do this and move it to the same Host I am using for my own forum. I chose this host because the owner is a SMF user himself and has a great in depth understanding of the software.

Second is how we fund this forum and keep it online for us all to use. I propose we open up a donation link via PayPal where by anyone can donate any money if they wish. These funds will go towards the payment for the Host.

I would love to see the forum Ad free and no membership fees, everyone has the same access! Although there is a post count base system on SMF. It allows an amount of PM's according to your post count. eg you have 50 or less posts your allowed 30 PM's, next level is if you have 100 or less posts your allowed 50 PM's and so on....

Advertising on the forum, this should be free and open to Heli relevant or community relevant advertising. Ever since we moved to SMF it has been running like this and has been working well. We have had Sponsor giveaways from some Aussie online hobby shops already and I would love to see this continue.

There are many ways we can do things, what I have said is just ideas and open to any input on any of this. So with that all said I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts.....

Firstly I would like to say thanks guys for maintaining the site. Arc Heli was where I went for info along with my club when I started flying 4 or so years ago and has been  great resource.

With our club we have a club group on Arc Heli where we used to have day to day discussions. This has changed in the last year or so and we now do this with a private Facebook messenger chat. Perhaps this means Facebook is an option although I’m sure you’ve considered what this means for Arc Heli. Personally I’m not a fan of Facebook but have had to follow the majority.

I believe most Heli flyers at our club still follow what’s happening on Arc Heli and still post for help and items for sale.

I’m not sure if any of this helps or is just my ramblings but thanks again for keeping the site available.

I'm glad that ARCHELI continues. To me it's the go to site for info-asking and providing, seeing what's new, and most importantly events.

How much per annum does it cost to keep the board up?

Thanks for the Feedback guys....

Ralph, with the provider I use it's about $200 a year for my Forum. This could be a little more with the size of the database arcHELI has!

So how many active users on Arc Heli these days? I ask because it’s likely that a percentage of the active users will be the ones who donate. $200 a year doesn’t seem like a lot of money so it should be reachable. What are the other costs (examples I mean, not the actual values).

Other costs include the domain name and the mods like the (http://archeli.com.au/Themes/default/images/admin/like.png) button, prefix for the for sale section, shoutbox, Advanced attachement uploader and Alerts Pro.....

Archeli has definitely change over the years Steve, it's gone from having quite a number of sponsors and also paid subscriptions.

I remember all to well what it was like and I'm sure many others do aswell.

It's gone from not being able to advertise your items elsewhere, to being able to advertise here and elsewhere.

So I think these changes are for the good and may help bring older members back to this forum and make it great again.

Cheers Dave.

Thanks Ozzy. Sounds like a donation expectation would be a sensible amount. Count me in.

I have had a long break from the hobby and just started to come back in again.
One of the 1st things I did was having a look at archeli and noticed how dead it was. So we might all have to do our bid to liven it up again.
In regards to cost of running the Site. I personally would be happy if there is a way to do an automatic payment system.....lets say $5,-  a months for myself...just as an option.
Personally, I don't think that the cost are the main issue. More important, how long will the moderators be around to look after the Site??? I am assuming that it is quite time consuming and these guys do this for the love of the hobby. So unless this site starts to become more active again, it would be hard to expect the moderators and everybody else in the background to stay interested and add their precious time outside of work.
Yes I know everybody is using Facebook and I am as well, but that is not the same as using a proper forum. As an example, I wouldn't be typing all this on my iPhone...too hard.
So for me archeli is for when I am at home at night and got my Laptop going. Facebook is for (me) during daytime just having a quick glance of what is being sold/couple of pictures etc.

Steve

What I think would make me use it a lot more would be the ease of attaching photos
It is so easy to just snap a pic with your phone or tablet and attach in Facebook compared to uploading to a host the copying the link and pasting here
With multiple pic it gets a bit painful

Maybe there is already a way of doing this that I don’t know of

Hey Muzz, when you reply to a thread you will see an option under the reply text box to Attachment and other option. Click on that and then you click on choose a file, from there you can upload a pic then post it

Tapatalk is the other easy option. Take the photo with you phone, and post them into the forum.
