Why?
Money/Health/working more/too many other toys
I doubt its through lack of interest.

Not sure what you mean M... Im just surprised at how good the poll results are. It's not that often that we have enough data points in a poll that so nicely shows a bell curve :)

Little bit of skew towards the older, more capable pilots ;)

The age group of 31-40 dominates the poll.
Something to do with Midlife crisis?

Lol ... ok let's have some fun with the data :) My drunken interpretation only, and this close to Christmas, please refrain from crucifying me as well :)

Skew is maybe because very few 0-10 know about archeli, 11-20 are limited funds-wise and whatever they have are being used to setup future social life (ipads, smartphones, clothes, sports, and let's not forget VCE)... and those below zero are heavily underrepresented :hic:

21-30... mostly like getting your rocks off as often as you can, and whatever leftover maybe goes towards 10% deposit and rent. With so much pressure to participate in anything social esp online gaming, a sim really isn't going to do it for the 10-30 year olds. Unfortunately, a sim, and patience, is required to save precious $$$ to keep us poor folk afloat with helis. So rc helis is a start stop start stop for these folk...

31-40... somewhere within this period, most will have a personal rennaisance. In the real world mid-life crises also occur somewhere here. IT's the U-turn point for those 10-30 starters as well... those who've set up weekend sporting activities either continue because they love it, or reduce because they don't. Those that really love helis realise that it's really a second marriage, requiring time, commitment, periods of love-hate, always looking at other helis :shifty: and the opportunity to own many without repercussion. Plus it's a time for toddlers to keep the wifey busy... as well as provide the perfect 'It'll entertain the kids and teach them lots growing up' excuse..

41-100... real life gets in the way. You mate (or you) just got a boat, so fishing is back on the agenda. Somewhere here reflexes drop off, and arthritis kicks in. Few starters, mainly carry overs from early starters. Bills start to catch up on you as well...

To summarise, the curve is very representative of any niche hobby that requires funds, good eyesight, reflexes, dexterity, and a bucket load of time.

I did mean the 'after 50's' drop off in participation in our hobby.
Or simular other hobbies as you say.

Mind you theres the few who's moto is, 'He who dies with the most and expensive toys, Wins'

Most oldies I know of, have dropped out, mainly due to poor health[which causes associated problems like--Car License/social interaction problems/Unco-ordinated flying/repairs/etc]

But with most people living longer and healther life styes, it surprise me that theres such a drop off so much after 50 still.

As you say-maybe they are just opting for a change of life style.
The 'been there, done that' does set in after 20 years or so of the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I flew that hell out all sorts of Ultralights and Gliders for 20 odd years, then one day just thought I could be doing something better.

Went back to RC flying which I had started young, but didn't do much of.
I now just want to perfect Piroflips before I die[got a long way to go though!!!!!!]
It will take me till a 100 I think!!!!!!!!!!!  [halfway there now--100 that is]

Girls tell me I'm like a kid
According to these sentences, am I too old or too young to fly helis?

Pretty hard to compete with heli's when you are +60 yo.  Many of us, including me, have gone into FPV drone racing because our heli reflexes give us some advantages over many (but not all!) younger guys. I may not be the fastest but I may do a Bradbury and at least finish the race, lol!

Cheers,
TomC
Lots of Blade Heli's, TT X50E, Ion-x, HC/BD3sx on most
Lots of E-Planks, multi's, now into FPV, MAAA Gold Wings, Heli's and Planes
